Personal and Medical Reasons for Cosmetic Surgery
People may have cosmetic surgery for a number of reasons. Many people elect to have procedures performed for personal enhancement. These procedures are generally done because the person is not confident about the way they look. Cosmetic surgery could also be performed on the recommendation of a doctor in connection with some type of medical condition or circumstance.
Cosmetic Surgery as a Personal Enhancement
A personal choice for this type of surgery could be made to improve the natural appearance of a person’s facial features. Rhinoplasty, which is commonly known as a nose job, is one of the more common surgical procedures done to improve someone’s appearance. Cheek or chin implants are also personal choice procedures. Changing the way the facial features look can boost a person’s sense of self-esteem.
Additional procedures for cosmetic surgery, which would be classified as personal enhancements include breast augmentations, face lifts and tummy tucks. These are all done to make a person feel better about their body image. Women will often choose to have breast lifts or tummy tucks after being pregnant to restore their body to its former shape. This makes the woman more confident about her appearance and more comfortable with her own body.
Little known procedures, which also fall under the heading of cosmetic surgery include liposuction, Botox injections and laser resurfacing. These are personal choice procedures people will have done to make them feel better about their overall body image.
Cosmetic Surgery as a Medical Procedure
When cosmetic surgery is performed for a medical reason, it could be classified as plastic surgery. Some of the procedures will be the same as those performed for personal enhancement. A breast reduction could be performed as a personal enhancement, but it could also be performed on the recommendation of a doctor to relieve stress placed on the back. Breast reconstruction could be performed on someone who had a partial mastectomy.
In some cases a person could have incurred an injury, which left them disfigured in some way. Cosmetic surgery can correct or reduce the physical appearance of scars left after a severe injury. This type of surgery can dramatically improve the person’s self-esteem especially if the scaring is on the face.
